I would like to bring to your attention a few key issues. As many of you know, in February the Supreme Court heard a case, Janus v. AFSCME, that could really hurt unions. The goal of the case is to defund public sector unions like ours by allowing teachers to continue to get the benefits that BTA offers without having to pay for them. This would severely weaken our union's ability to negotiate new contracts and to fight to protect your rights. As you will see below, teachers in states that already allow this, these states are known as Right-to-Work, are paid significantly less then teachers in states like New York. Recently, teachers in West Viriginia, a Right-to-Work state, were forced to go on strike for 9 days to get a pay increase. I have included a video from their strike below.
April is also the time for state testing to begin. I have provided some information below from NYSUT about your rights as a parent and a teacher surrounding Opt-Out.
Finally, Bellport recently hosted Randi Weingarten, the President of the AFT. She came to our school on March 19th to meet with teachers as well as conduct a class. In the class she spoke with the students about the importance of unions.
