As we enter the the spring, we are going to experience some major changes in our profession. This month has already been a topsy turvy ride with the tragedy that has occurred in Florida to incidences of discipline in our own district to the hearing of such an important Supreme Court case at the end of this month. 2018 represents one of the most important years in our unions history. A Supreme Court case, Janus v. AFSCME, will be heard by the Supreme Court on February 26th. This case is very similar to the Friedrichs case from 2016. A decision in Janus is expected in June and it is not expected to be decided in favor of organized labor. A loss in this case will bring Right to Work to our state and create free riders within our union. These free riders will weaken our union, making it tougher to negotiate on your behalf. Your union is working with NYSUT to meet with the membership and talking to them about the importance of sticking with the union. More information on the case can be found at UnderstandingJanus.com. Over the coming weeks and months, it is important that you keep an eye out for your ambassadors as we will be sending out important information about the case and about sticking with our union.
